Desea Soñar
“I want to dream”
“Desea Soñar” is a music and community program for newly-arrived immigrant youth and unaccompanied minors in Chelsea and East Boston, MA.
Desea Soñar is a year-long program that teaches student how to engage with their community through songwriting and to instill self-confidence through proficiency in an instrument and participation in a musical ensemble.
Desea Soñar utilizes cultural exploration and social-emotional skill building to help our students reflect on their journeys and connect to peers with similar experiences.
The first semester focuses on establishing a foundation of musical skills and building an in-program community while the second semester will pivot to students writing original songs that address the issues important to them.
Eureka has presented this program with La Colaborativa since 2018. Based in Chelsea, MA, La Colaborativa empowers immigrants to enhance the social and economic health of the community and its people; and to hold institutional decision-makers accountable to the community.
Chelsea and East Boston have some of the highest Latino populations in Massachusetts, and Chelsea has the highest percentage of foreign-born residents in the state. Many of our students are recent immigrants who are integrating into their new community, and many of the students we have served are refugees who have experienced trauma and difficult situations.
